Stranger Things Season 5: How Eddie Munson's Spirit Lives On Through Dustin Henderson (2025)

The enduring legacy of Eddie Munson in Stranger Things Season 5

A character's death can leave a lasting impact, and Eddie Munson's spirit is a prime example of this.

Stranger Things, a Netflix phenomenon, owes much of its success to its diverse and captivating ensemble cast. Among the memorable characters, Eddie Munson, played by Joseph Quinn, left an indelible mark in Season 4. His non-conformist, heavy metal persona resonated with viewers, who wished they could be friends with this unique individual. Eddie's pride in being a punk rock dork made his absence in the final season all the more poignant.

While Eddie's death in the season 4 finale was tragic, it served a purpose - ensuring the survival of his friends. Although Quinn won't be returning, Eddie's influence will continue through Dustin Henderson, portrayed by Gaten Matarazzo.

In a 2025 interview with SFX Magazine, Matarazzo revealed how Dustin unknowingly emulated Eddie. He said, "There are subconscious changes Dustin doesn't recognize, and his friends don't either. Dustin made conscious choices to resemble Eddie, adopting his values and love for Hellfire and D&D."

Eddie's final moments with Dustin, where he asked Dustin to look after the outcasts and professed his love, showcased his kindness despite his tarnished reputation. Very few, like Dustin, knew the truth behind Chrissy Cunningham's shocking death at Vecna's hands. Matarazzo believes Dustin's transformation into Eddie 2.0 is an unhealthy coping mechanism for his unprocessed grief.

It's intriguing to hear Matarazzo's perspective on Dustin's tribute to Eddie, which comes at the cost of his own innocence. Losing someone who accepted you for who you are can be devastating. While Eddie's edginess didn't deter those who loved him, Dustin's emulation seems to have a negative impact heading into the final season.

As the Hawkins kids grow older in a world forever changed by the interdimensional rift, it's natural for them to evolve. Dustin, always an outsider with Mike, Will, and Lucas, now finds himself dealing with his loss in an unhealthy manner, lashing out at his friends. Matarazzo hints at a schism, saying, "It's by choice, a desire to be let go of by that unit. People tend to detach from their support systems when they need them most, and that's what Dustin is dealing with."

Eddie's punk spirit didn't deter those who loved him, but Dustin faces a different challenge. Eddie is considered a Satanic pariah by the Hawkins community, and Dustin can't let his friend's reputation be tarnished. It would have been easy for Stranger Things to bring Quinn back, but letting dead characters stay dead adds depth to the story. We'll have to wait and see if Dustin can salvage Eddie's reputation and reveal the truth about the Hellfire legend to Hawkins.

Volume 1 of Stranger Things Season 5 streams on Netflix starting November 26, 2025.
