Global Travel Alert: 11 New Countries Added to Methanol Poisoning Warning List

The UK Foreign Office has expanded its travel advisory to include 11 additional countries, urging travelers to be cautious about the risks of methanol poisoning from contaminated alcoholic beverages. This update comes in response to a global surge in reported methanol poisoning cases.

The new list includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda. These countries join the previously listed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda, which were added last month following several high-profile incidents, including the tragic death of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Methanol, a toxic industrial alcohol used in antifreeze and other industrial products, can be lethal when consumed in even small amounts. It can cause blindness or death within 12 to 48 hours. The substance is tasteless and odorless, making it nearly impossible to detect in alcoholic drinks.

In some countries, methanol is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to reduce costs, taking advantage of its inoffensiveness. The Foreign Office is actively promoting a campaign to educate travelers on reducing risks and recognizing symptoms of methanol poisoning. Minister Hamish Falconer emphasizes the importance of travelers being aware of the signs of methanol poisoning.

"When traveling abroad and consuming spirits, it's crucial to stick to reputable establishments and avoid homemade or free shots of alcohol," Falconer advised. "If you experience severe hangover symptoms or notice vision problems, seek medical attention immediately."

The comprehensive list of countries now posing a risk of methanol poisoning includes Brazil, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Fiji, Indonesia, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Vietnam, and the newly added countries.
