Sim Racing: The New Gateway to the Track
For Permit B, a significant shift has occurred. Candidates can now include their participation in official sim racing competitions, specifically the Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS), as part of their application. This adjustment is exclusive to Permit B, but it opens up a whole new world of opportunities for aspiring racers.
Easing the Path to Permit A
Permit A, which grants access to faster cars and the prestigious SP9 GT3 class, has also seen a relaxation of its requirements. Instead of the previous two results and 14 race laps, drivers now only need one result and eight laps in a Permit-B car. Additionally, the minimum driving time criterion has been removed entirely. This marks a significant departure from the stringent requirements of the 2010s, when drivers had to meet specific percentile targets and complete 18 laps.
While these changes aim to enhance safety on the track, they also address a common issue: the waiting loop that forced teams to make last-minute driver changes for the 24-hour race. A notable critic of this system was none other than Valentino Rossi, the MotoGP legend. Rossi expressed his desire to participate in the Nurburgring 24 Hours, but acknowledged the challenge of obtaining the necessary permit through traditional races.
The Impact of Sim Racing: A New Perspective
The most striking change, however, is the inclusion of sim racing as a valid pathway to obtaining Permit B. Drivers with an International D circuit licence or higher can now count their participation in virtual races towards their permit. Finishing three out of four rounds of the Digital Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie (DNLS) in winter, without penalties, can now be used as a substitute for starting in an RCN race. This is a game-changer, as it provides an optional third route to Permit B, alongside the traditional pathways.
Verstappen's Legacy: A Catalyst for Change
A key moment that influenced this decision was Max Verstappen's exceptional performance at NLS9, driving an Emil Frey Ferrari 296 GT3. Despite having no real-world multi-class racing experience, Verstappen's maturity in traffic was remarkable, thanks to his extensive sim racing background. Christian Vormann, VLN sporting director, highlighted the accuracy of sim racing in reproducing real-world scenarios. He was part of both the real NLS race control and the DNLS race direction, giving him a unique perspective.
Robin Strycek, DMSB coordinator for sport, emphasized the unique link between real and digital motorsport, with the new Permit B regulations reinforcing this connection. The decision to include sim racing as a recognized pathway towards an official licence reflects the German ASN's serious approach to virtual motorsport. In October 2018, the ASN made headlines by recognizing sim racing as an official motorsport discipline, and now they're taking it a step further.
